4WD Inspections: What’s the Difference?

A 4WD or AWD is a car that’s specifically designed for off-road driving. It has a number of features that make it different from a normal car that allow it to accommodate the increased impact that comes with driving on irregular surfaces, as well as added wear & tear.

These include:
These features make the car more capable when driving on rough terrain, but they also come with some drawbacks. For example, the increased ground clearance can make the car more susceptible to problems with the chassis, suspension, and tyres. The larger tyres can also make the car more difficult to control on paved roads.

If you’re considering buying a four-wheel-drive, it’s important to be aware of these potential problems. the best way to protect yourself is to hire a specialist in 4WD and AWD inspections.

What Goes into a

4wd car inspection?

For a number of reasons a 4WD car inspection is different to a regular inspection. The
following are just a few differences our team keeps in mind.

Tyre Condition and Safety Check

One of the most common problems with four-wheel drive cars is tyre damage. The increased ground
clearance and larger, more robust tyres make the car more likely to hit rocks and other obstacles when driving on rough terrain. This can lead to flats, punctures, and even blowouts.

To avoid this problem, it’s important to inspect your tyres before and after each drive. If you see any damage, make sure to repair or replace the tyre as soon as possible. 4WD tyres can range from $250 to 400 each so it’s important to have your tyres checked by a Verified inspector to ensure they’re in good condition before purchasing the vehicle. They may look fine on the surface, but it’s impossible to tell if they’re in good condition without specialist equipment and a trained eye. The last thing you need is to purchase a second hand 4WD, only to have to replace the tyres a couple of months down the track.

When it comes to our 4WD Inspections, we don’t just look at the tyres and guess the amount of wear and tear and provide a vague number. A GPS 4WD Car Inspector will scan the tread and disk brakes with a laser that provides uneven wear analysis measurement within 0.1mm. This allows high accuracy and detailed replacement & maintenance suggestions for tyre service. We’ll even look up your 4WD tyre in a DOT code database to check expiration notices and tyre recall information.

The Chassis Could be Damaged

The chassis of a car is the frame that supports the body and all the other components. It’s typically made from steel or aluminium and is designed to be strong and lightweight. However, the increased ground clearance of a four-wheel-drive car can make the chassis more susceptible to damage and off road driving can put the chassis of a car through a massive amount of wear and tear. An intact chassis, free of cracks and damage is essential for the safety of your car. A damaged chassis can lead to a host of problems, such as:

To protect our customers, we go over the chassis with a fine-tooth comb. We’re looking for any cracks, dents, or other damage that could compromise the integrity of the chassis. If we find any damage, you’ll be fully aware.

You Should Have Your

4WD Inspected for Shifter Fork Damage

The shifter fork of a 4WD is designed to engage the different gears in the transmission. However, this part can be susceptible to damage, particularly when driving on rough terrain. Shifter fork damage can be difficult to repair and may require a complete replacement of the transmission which can cost thousands of dollars.
Our 4WD Inspectors are on the lookout for any potential issues with shifting gears. We check for damage to the shifter fork and make sure that it’s properly aligned with the transmission. Your Inspector will perform a run-through of the shifter gears during the road test to check they are transitioning smoothly. If we find any problems, we’ll let you know and make sure it’s outlined in your report.

We Check

the Suspension

When it comes to driving a 4WD or AWD, a well-functioning suspension system is essential for your car to deal with off-road driving. Poor functioning suspension means your chassis is more subject to damage which will set you back thousands in repairs.
During your 4WD inspection, we check the suspension system for any damage or wear and tear. We also check the shocks, struts, and springs to make sure they’re in good condition. If we find any problems with the suspension system, we’ll make sure you’re aware of it.
